Facebook, Instagram and Messenger went down for over an hour with thousands of users in Greece and abroad reporting connectivity problems. In Greece, shortly after 17:00, more than thousands of reports were registered from users experiencing problems connecting to Facebook.Reuters reported at 17:41 that more than 500,000 reports were observed worldwide for Facebook and 47,000 reports for Instagram. This means that many countries around the world were affected, but it is not currently known how many.
Shortly after 18:20, users regained access.
Meta statement: We know there's a problem
Meta's status page indicated that the company's products were experiencing major issues. “We are aware of an issue affecting Facebook Login. Our engineering teams are actively looking to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the page said.
According to a number of international media, Meta has been asked to comment on the development, but there is currently no official announcement clarifying the problem.
Earlier, Meta spokesperson Andy Stone posted a message to X, saying: “We know people are having trouble accessing our services.
In messenger users trying to send a message to their contacts were getting a notification that the message could not be sent.
Threads also experienced problems, with users unable to log into their accounts, facing a “sorry, something went wrong”.
Some users flocked to Platform X to see if others were having problems.
It is indicative that there were users urging people not to panic if they are having difficulties connecting as the problem is widespread. The New York Times points out in a related article that “the shutdown comes ahead of a Wednesday deadline for Meta and other tech giants, including Apple and Google, to comply with the Digital Marketplace Act, a new law of the European Union aimed at increasing competition in the digital economy. The law requires companies to revise the way some of their products work so that smaller competitors can gain access to their users.”
